The hands behind the birds, meet Shirley
What began as a creative outlet became something Shirley never quite expected—a flock of colorful little personalities finding homes far beyond her own.
For Shirley, creating has always been about following curiosity. She finds inspiration in the unexpected-an interesting texture, a beautiful piece of glass, something discovered along the shoreline. Her work reflects the way she sees the world: with imagination, humor, and an appreciation for the perfectly imperfect.
From selecting each piece of glass to pairing a finished bird with just the right piece of naturally weathered wood, Shirley makes every bird individually by hand. Much of the wood she uses is gathered along the shores of Lake Superior, making the process as much about discovery as it is about making.
But Shirley Birds is really about joy—the joy of creating something by hand, finding beauty in imperfect natural materials, and watching each little bird develop a personality of its own.
Made slowly. Made individually. Made by Shirley.
